Common Orthodontic Problems

We encourage you to call or text our orthodontist, Dr. Steven Ricci, at 678-417-9848 if you feel your smile may benefit from our services.

We are committed to treating all of your orthodontic problems so you can reach a smile that is straighter, healthier, more functional, and more attractive. Some of the most common orthodontic problems we see at our office include the following:

Overbite

An overbite is one of the most common orthodontic problems. In an overbite, the upper front teeth extend out over the lower front teeth. This sometimes causes the lower front teeth to bite into the roof of the mouth. In more severe cases, an overbite can make chewing difficult. Correcting this issue with braces during the teen years is often best. However, adults can correct the problem with braces as well.

Underbite

An underbite occurs when the lower jaw extends out, resulting in the lower front teeth sitting in front of the upper front teeth. Issues with chewing can also occur when this problem occurs.

Open Bite

An open bite is characterized by upper and lower front teeth that do not overlap. The jaw and the teeth fail to meet together. This often causes problems with proper chewing, and it may also contribute to other unwanted habits like tongue thrusting. This is often the result of excessive thumb-sucking.

Crossbite

In a crossbite, the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth. This may result in tooth stratification and misaligned jaw growth. Treatment allows a better alignment to occur with the top and lower teeth.

Upper Front Teeth Protrusion

In this type of bite, the upper teeth extend too far forward or the lower front teeth don’t extend far enough forward. This can cause the lower teeth to grow at a larger size that can cause more significant problems in the future that will require more care. Treatment helps the teeth and jaw to grow correctly together.

Dental Midlines Not Matched

This orthodontic problem is caused when the back bite does not fit and match correctly, and it may negatively impact the jaw and proper dental function.
