Holiday Dental Care

The holidays are a fantastic time of year. Friends and family come around, there are plenty of activities to take advantage of, and, of course, there’s all that delicious food. However, this time of year can make it very difficult to be conscious of your dental health. At Ricci Orthodontics in Johns Creek, Georgia, we want to be there for you for all of your orthodontic needs. As a result, we have compiled a list of ways to practice holiday dental care this season.

Holiday Dental Care

The first way you can keep your teeth healthy is to make sure you practice a dental care routine. Like many dentists, we strongly recommend you floss and brush your teeth at least twice a day. This practice keeps you from getting food stuck in your teeth, which could create bacteria and lead to cavities. It is especially critical to keep your teeth in tip-top shape around the holidays. At this time of year, much of the food you eat is very sugary, such as candy canes or cookies.

Speaking of these sweet treats, our second-holiday dental care tip is to make a conscious effort to choose food like carrots and cheese slices. While that frosted sugar cookie is delicious, it is also extremely sugary. That cookie could once again lead to cavities because sugary foods create more bacteria. We’re not saying that you can’t have any sweets this holiday season. We’re just saying that you should limit how many you have, and choose vegetables or dairy products as an alternative that may help reduce cavities.

Last, but not least, use your common sense! This means don’t skip that dentist appointment you made for the week after Thanksgiving. Your dentist can help you keep your teeth clean and give you more pointers on how to take care of your teeth over the holidays. Using your common sense also means that you should use a mouthguard if you’re going to be playing a pickup football game in the back yard, come Thanksgiving, or any other time you’re playing a sport. You don’t want your teeth knocked out by a stray elbow. That would mean you’d be missing out on all that delicious food, which is never a good thing.
